Cooking oil – 2 tbsp

Cinnamon – small stick

Garlic pod – 5

Onion – 3

Drumstick – 1 or 2(optional)

Tomato – 5(should be more since no tamarind used in this)

Chilli powder – 1 spoon(you can adjust according to your taste)

Turmeric powder -¼ spoon

Salt – as required

Curry leaf – 2 strips

For grinding:

Onion – 1

Garlic pod – 5

Coconut – ½ cup

Fried gram -¼ cup

Saunf(sombu)  -½ spoon

Pepper – 1 spoon


  • Chop onions and tomatoes finely.
  • Cut drumstick(optional) into long pieces.
  • Peel off skin of garlic cloves and keep ready.
  • Heat oil, add cinnamon stick and fry little.
  • Add garlic and sauté for 2  minutes.
  • Add onion and sauté for 2 more minutes.
  • Add drumstick at this stage(if you are using it).
  • Add tomatoes and sauté very well till tomato is fully fried and cooked and turn mashy.  This step is important for good taste.
  • Make a paste of items mentioned under “for grinding” and add to kadai.
  • Add chilli powder, turmeric powder, salt and curry leaves.
  • Add enough water and allow to boil till it reaches thick consistency and raw smell vanishes completely.
  • Enjoy with hot white rice pouring ghee on it.
