dal makhani


Black whole urad dal       1 cup

Rajma                                         ½ cup

Tomato                                      2

Onion                                          2

Green chilly                            2

Ginger                                        small piece

Garlic                                         3 to 4 cloves

Salt                                             as required

Cooking oil                            2 tbsp

Jeera                                         1 spoon

Hing                                           small pinch

Coriander leaf                     half handful

Red chilly powder            ¼ spoon

Coriander powder           ¼ spoon

Garam masala                   ¼ spoon

Fresh cream                          ¼ cup

Butter                                        2 tbsp (optional)


  • Soak dals overnight and cook well in pressure cooker for 8 whistles with salt.
  • Make a paste of tomato, onion, green chilly, ginger and garlic.
  • Heat oil in kadai, add jeera and hing.
  • Add the paste and fry very well for almost 10 minutes and stop when the oil separates out.
  • Now add coriander powder, chilly powder and garam masala powder, cooked dals and again cook for 10 minutes with flame in sim.
  • Add fresh cream, mix well and switch off after a minute or two.
  • Add butter and garnish with coriander leaves.
  • Mix well and serve.

Very good side dish for rotis and rice.
