Wheat flour                    1 cup

Channa dal                          1 cup

Green chilly                        4

Coriander leaf                   ¼ bunch

Salt                                         as required

Ghee                                       as required

Mustard                                little

Jeera                                       1 spoon

Hing                                       liberal pinch

Lemon                                   1

Cooking oil                         2 tbsp


  • Mix wheat flour, salt and one spoon of ghee, adding water little by little to form a soft at the same time tight dough(similar to chapathi dough).

  • Outer cover for kara poli is ready.

  • Chop coriander leaves.  Divide into 2 portions.

  • Cut the lemon and squeeze the juice.

  • Wash channa dal and cook for 2 whistles.

  • Make a coarse paste in mixie with salt, half of coriander leaves and green chillies.

  • Heat oil, add mustard, jeera and hing.

  • Add the paste, mix well.

  • Add remaining coriander leaves and mix well.

  • Switch off burner and add lemon juice, mix well.

  • Puranam for kara poli is ready.

  • Make small puri with the dough made, place the stuffing at the center and close it.

  • Remove excess dough(if any), found after closing.

  • Again roll it gently into a big round as you do for making chapathis.

  • Heat a dosa pan, place this gently, turn side when one side is cooked, take out once golden.

  • You can either use ghee while preparing the polis or smear with ghee after taking out.

  • Excellent kara polis are ready.  Trust me, it tasted extremely good.
