VAZHAIPU-1 vazhaipoo-cut vazhaipoo vadai

In Tamil, it is known as vazhaipoo. It is well known for its health benefits. To prepare this for cooking, apply oil in hand, remove the outer thick skin, take out florets, repeat the same for full flower, have a bunch of florets at a time in hand, rub on its head gently. Remove the string with a head, in each and every floret. Also remove small white transparent portion at the bottom of each floret. Chop into any shape of your choice and immediately transfer into vessel filled with diluted buttermilk to avoid discoloration.


Chana dal                            1 cup

Urad dal                               1 tbsp

Toor dal                                1 tbsp

Vazhaipoo chopped      ¼ cup

Green chilly                        4

Salt                                         as required

Hing                                       pinch

Curry leaf                            1 strip

Coriander leaf                  2 tbsp

Cooking oil                         as required for frying vada


  • Soak the dals for 2 to 3 hours, drain water, grind coarse with green chilies, salt and hing.
  • Heat one spoon of oil, add chopped vazhaipoo and sauté well for 2 minutes and transfer to dough.
  • Add chopped coriander leaves and curry leaves, mix well and prepare vadas.

Very tasty and healthy vadas.
