BANANA FLOWER(VAZHAIPOO) RECIPES

VAZHAIPU-1

In Tamil, it is known as vazhaipoo. It is well known for its health benefits. To prepare this for cooking, apply oil in hand, remove the outer thick skin, take out florets, repeat the same for full flower, have a bunch of florets at a time in hand, rub on its head gently. Remove the string with a head, in each and every floret. Also remove small white transparent portion at the bottom of each floret. Chop into any shape of your choice and immediately transfer into vessel filled with diluted buttermilk to avoid discoloration.

ITEMS REQUIRED:

Vazhaipoo                           1 cup

Toor dal                                ½ cup

Red chilly                             3

Salt                                          as required

Hing                                        liberal pinch

Cooking oil                         4 tbsp

Mustard                                little

Urad dal                               little

Curry leaf                            1 strip

Turmeric powder            pinch

METHOD:

  • Cook vazhaipoo with salt and turmeric powder.
  • Soak toor dal for an hour and grind coarse with red chilies, salt and hing.
  • Heat oil, add mustard, urad dal, curry leaves then ground paste.
  • Sauté well and break the dal fully.
  • Once done, add cooked vazhaipoo, mix well, add coconut(optional) and switch off.

VAZHAIPOO COCONUT PORIYAL

ITEMS REQUIRED:

Vazhaipoo                           1 cup

Salt                                         as required

Turmeric powder            pinch

Scrapped coconut          ½ cup

Cooking oil                         2 tbsp

Mustard                                little

Urad dal                               little

Red chilly                             2

METHOD:

  • Heat oil, add mustard, urad dal and broken red chilies.
  • Add vazhaipoo, salt and turmeric powder.
  • Mix well, sprinkle enough water and keep it closed till it is fully cooked.
  • Once it is fully done and water is completely drained, add scrapped coconut and switch off.
  • Adding a spoon of coconut oil will enhance the taste.
