SAMBAR

ITEMS REQUIRED:

Onion small or big                            200g

Tomato                                                    2

Tamarind                                               gooseberry size

Toor dal                                                   ½ cup

Green chilly                                           2

Sugar/jaggery                                    1 spoon

Oil                                                              as required

Turmeric powder                             small pinch

Sambar masala: (make paste with following items)

Channa dal                                          1 spoon

Dhania                                                    2 spoons

Red chilly                                             6

Hing                                                         small pinch

Coconut                                                ½ cup

Jeera                                                     ½ spoon

For seasoning:

Mustard                                               1 spoon

Curry leaves                                       as required

METHOD:

Cut big onion into big pieces or small onions into half pieces.

Cook the toor dal.

Heat oil in  a vessel , add cut onions and fry well.  Add cut tomatoes and green chillies and fry.  Add the cooked toor dal , turmeric powder and boil for sometime.  Add the ground sambar masala paste to it, then add the salt and sugar and boil.  When onion becomes tender, add tamarind extract and boil till smell goes.  Season with mustard and curry leaves.

Suits well with tiffin items.
